The University Grant Commission (UGC) has released the draft of new guidelines for UG studies on 5 December. According to this, students will be able to take admission for degree courses twice a year, degree studies can be completed in more or less time. Higher education institutes can give degree students the option to complete the degree course in 3 to 4 years, 2 years or 5 years.

6 Central Universities will now give admission twice a year

Sukant Majumdar, Minister of State for Education in the Central Government, has given this information in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha. He did not reveal the names of the universities. He also said, ‘To implement the policy of giving admission to students twice a year, it is necessary that educational institutions plan it carefully.’

Students can also take break between degrees

IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti had suggested a policy to increase or decrease the degree time. He said that the process of higher education should be as flexible as possible so that more youth can get educated.

Keeping this need of flexibility in mind, UGC has also brought the option for students to take a break between degrees under the National Education Policy-2020. If a student wants, he can take a break from the course and come back later to complete it.

Regarding this, the UGC Chairman had said that our job is to make students critical thinkers. We want to make them such that they can help in the development of the country. He said that UGC has already given multiple entry and exit options, so that weaker students can take breaks and complete the syllabus as per their choice. Our aim is to make students more flexible and provide more opportunities.

Institutions will decide admission in ADP and EDP

According to the SOP, educational institutions will form a committee which will assess the potential of the students based on their applications at the end of the first and second semesters. Only after this the committee will decide how many credits students are required to bring per semester. It will also recommend which program the students should join, EDP or ADP.

According to the SOP, one can apply for ADP only till the end of the second semester. By joining ADP, subjects will increase in the next semester and extra credits will be available for them. The committee will decide the minimum number of credits required to be earned each semester in the degree program in EDP.

Although the examination and evaluation system will remain the same as in the standard degree programme, a note of the time taken to complete the degree, more or less, will be written on the degree. However, this degree will also be recognized like a standard degree while being used for academic or job recruitment.
